Modernizing and Scaling applications while reducing costs

With the onset of COVID -19, stepping out of our homes for any issues related to smartphones was a tough decision. At the same time, it was necessary to keep our devices in their right state to ensure visibility of the recent updates in the city, country with respect to COVID cases, lockdown updates & recent guidelines by the government. The situation asked for consumers to look for options over the internet to help them repair their smartphones and hence Yaantra started seeing an increase in traffic.

As for any B2C company, increase in user traffic would proportionately relate to more infrastructure needed for the applications & database to support the user request, ensuring every customer is able to submit their query. Also, as more & more consumers started eyeing online solutions, no downtime could be afforded as it would directly affect decrease in business in these challenging times.

Hence Yaantra started exploring other CSPs with the objective of reducing infrastructure costs & ensuring application performance is improved at the same time. Searce, alongside help with the Google Cloud team, implemented a complete TCO analysis on GCP for the then existing Yaantra’s landscape. Google Cloud was able to present savings of upwards of 30% basis the details received. This comforted the Yaantra team in exploring the platform further in terms of tech capabilities.

Achieving application & database security with GCP native network services

It was often observed by the Yaantra team about an increase in traffic to the application from specific IP addresses. These were malicious infringements with the objective to achieve downtime of the application by overloading with requests.

This is required for a solution to ensure such requests are not served to these IP addresses. Searce team supported the challenge by suggesting implementation of “Adaptive Protection” under Cloud Armor. Google Cloud Armor Adaptive Protection helped in protecting Yaantra’s workloads on Google Cloud such as applications, websites, and services against L7 distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks such as HTTP floods and other high-frequency layer 7 (application-level) malicious activity by leveraging the built-in machine-learning models that do the following:

Ensuring seamless migration for the MySQL Database

Yaantra was inherently leveraging managed MySQL database service in the then existing landscape. Due to reduced operational overhead and scalability, the team opted to leverage Cloud SQL as their managed database service offering on GCP. Yaantra had also implemented serveral SQL jobs for analytics on their database. This meant, ensuring seamless migration with the objective of the following:

Searce & Google Cloud team were able to completely migrate the MySQL database to Cloud SQL using the full backup & restoration method. Post the migration, the Yaantra team was able to test the migration data and restored SQL jobs on the pre-prod servers & eventually going live with the production environment.

From DevOps to NoOps, future ready infrastructure with Google Cloud

By choosing Google Cloud managed offerings such as Cloud SQL and the managed services offerings by Searce, the DevOps team at Yaantra can now focus on new application release, product features, version control etc. rather than managing their cloud infrastructure and can now operate with a smaller workforce saving operational costs by a 50% margin. With the Business growing rapidly and business forecasts of doing 10X in business by year 2023, Yaantra feels confident with Google cloud’s infrastructure that auto-scales per the requirement without any pre-warming and a dedicated managed services & support team at Searce that function 24X7 round the year.
